The Scottish Asbestos Helpline proudly announced Cancer Support Scotland as their nominated charity which they celebrated with the Charity’s CEO, Colin Graham at a charity golf day held at Prestwick Golf Club on Thursday 14thSeptember, 2017.
The event was organised by Cancer Support Scotland who provide a range of therapies and other services free of charge to sufferers, their families and carers following the devastation a diagnosis of cancer brings. Emotional wellbeing is essential during treatment and recovery which is delivered in the form of one-to-one counselling which can focus upon a range of changing emotions including anxiety, relationship concerns and bereavement. The charity also provide complementary therapies designed to improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing which include aromatherapy, podiatry/chiropody, massage, reiki, nail treatments and stress management.
Working in partnership with Industrial Disease Specialists, Dallas McMillan Solicitors of Glasgow, the Scottish Asbestos Helpline recognise the need to support cancer sufferers and their families which in some instances can be brought about through their previous work and exposure to asbestos fibres. Colin Tunstall of the Scottish Asbestos Helpline stated, “there is a recognised and proven association between asbestos exposure and certain types of cancer, in particular, mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer which are often associated to working environments where high levels of asbestos fibres existed. Importantly, the risk of developing lung cancer is increased in those workers who smoked and therefore it should not always be presumed smoking is the sole cause of your lung cancer if you have been a smoker. Asbestos-related lung cancer can take many years to develop, sometimes as long as 50 years, and if affected we would encourage you to speak with one of our friendly helpline team. Our expertise and experience also extends to other asbestos-related illnesses which include asbestosis, pleural thickening, pleural effusions and pleural plaques”
